"Hall of Mirrors" by Bruce Quek
Hall of Mirrors consists of 24 clocks and a barcode printer/scanner. It is an interactive installation that invites the viewer to participate in the viewing of the work. When you first enter the space a barcode printer greets you and once the button is pressed you receive a barcode that you will scan at the end. As you move around the space there are clocks along the wall that each have a different caption. You are invited to read each clock in detail as you move through the gallery. The captions on each of the clock signifies crimes, pollution and illness that are currently happening in the world at the same time. They each turn on different rotations and the end of each cycle is signalled by a 'ding'. Once you have passed through the space you are able to scan the barcode and you receive a receipt that indicates the time spent viewing the exhibition and what happened around the world during that time.
This installation focuses on the theme of time and how it relates to the world at large. It puts the outside issues of the world into the viewer's personal timeline. We don't normally think about how often these things happen. We are given statistics on these illnesses and deaths but we are always a bystander to them, the don't actively affect us in our day to day lives. This exhibition shows us just how often these events occur. It makes us think about the world and what is happening to others at this exact moment.
I found this work to be quite powerful. I saw other viewer's slow down and actually take in this work. It makes people think and contemplate the world.
